What is Tae Kwon Do?
|
Tae Kwon Do is a modern name for many combinations of the ancient Korean arts. The definition of the name Tae Kwon Do is "the way of the hands and feet ." The present day form of Tae Kwon Do was created in 1955, by combining the nine major schools of Korean Martial Arts. It is considered the most popular martial art in the world. Strict discipline is used to train the mind and the body, and the development of moral character is emphasized. Control of both mind and body, self discipline, kindness, humility and respect are necessary accompaniments of the physical aspects of Tae Kwon Do.
Tae Kwon Do has a proud and anchiant history in Korea. The oldest records in Tae Kwon Do we can find are in the royal tombs in Ko Goo Ryo dynasty in 37 BC. They are the paintings which show some of the Tae Kwon Do postures.
Hwa Rang Do “youth organization” was
established during the era of King Jin Heung (540-576). Tae
Kwon Do was their main subject. Keum Kang Yeok Sah (stone
engravings) show Tae Kwon Do postures.
The martial arts were originally aimed towards life preservation and self defense, but today people come to us from all walks of life, each with their own set of reasons for wanting to train at Lee Brothers Tae Kwon Do. Some want to learn self defense, others want to compete in tournaments, some seek to become physically fit and others just want to have fun. Whatever reason you choose, you will find others just like yourself studying at Lee Brothers. |
